Town of Gardiner
The Town of Gardiner located in Southeastern Ulster County was established April 2, 1853 by taking parcels from the Towns of Rochester, New Paltz and Shawangunk, it was originally called Church Corners and in the 1870's it was renamed after former Lieutenant Governor Addison Gardiner. It covers 45 square miles with a population at the last census of 5,238. The topography ranges from flats along the Wallkill River, to rolling terrain in the East and vertical cliffs leading up to the Shawangunk Ridge in the West.
In addition to the beautiful scenery the ridge, part of the Shawangunk Mountains, is known nationwide for its rock climbing. The Mohonk Preserve and Lake Minnewska (which actually has two lakes), are state parks and are located in the "Gunks"and offer miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf courses and swimming. The Ranch offers skydiving for both participants and spectators. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail starts in Southern Gardiner and runs North through New Paltz. You can hike, run, bike or horseback ride along the trail which is the roadbed of the former Wallkill-New Paltz railroad.
